I may be going to the US shortly and was wondering if I bought a Kindle over there would it work OK here in the UK?

I don't know, but would guess that would also mean you'd have to register it using a US credit card and address.
In purely technical terms a WiFi Kindle purchased in any country would work in any other country. A would also work in any country, although the 3G part would be dependant on Amazon having a deal with a 3G supplier in that country.
