Was this GP right in his diagnosis?

My 7yr old has had a sore throat since yesterday. This morning she woke up, had a temp, looked dreadful and was crying with the pain of her throat. I looked down it and her tonsils and whole area were very very swollen and red. She has 2 big lumps at either side then one lump in the middle, you could hardly see any further it was so inflamed. I took her to walk in centre and had to carry her up street as she was too ill to walk bless. I was expecting them to say it was tonsilitis as it is going round at the moment but he just said it was a viral sore throat. He didnt have any people skills and looked so uninterested and uncaring I am now doubting him! I myself have a sore throat too and although mine looks red and sore it is not swollen at all and I have no other symptoms so if hers is just viral like mine how come it looks so much worse?

Sounds viral to me....Ibuprofen I would have thought and then monitor the situation for 48hours.

White spots on red tonsils = bacterial infection, antibiotics (penicillin v)
no white spots on red tonsils = viral infection, paracetamol (Calpol) four times a day, Ibuprofen three times a day.

Well she remained no better over the weekend and just as I suspected needed antibiotics from our own GP on Monday who looked shocked when she saw how bad it was. Her throat didnt look any worse than it did on the Sat so if the weekend doc had have done the same she wouldnt have had to suffer like that grrr.

tiggy....don't get all worked up....whether it be bacterial OR viral, they both start the same....red tonsils. it takes at least 2 or3 days for "spots" to arrive in the bacteria tonsillitis.

Your 7yr old hasn't been dealt a "raw deal"

Oh she has no spots. Thats my point looked just as bad on sat as she did on mon. Anyway now she is eventually getting better thankfully.
Thank you and I will try to be less annoyed with the medical professions ha ha. :)

You've every right to be annoyed with a doctor who appears not to careless, some are a disgrace to their profession
