Can I Buy Saltpeter In Canada I Need It Because One Of My Recipe's Told Me To Use It. Also Its Good For An antiseptic in curing meat. I Searched Around 2 Drug Stores In My Area (Richmond Hill, Toronto) And None Have It.

saltpeter is potassium nitrate (KNO3)and is used to make explosives: in the current climate people don't want to sell it to you. You can make it yourself: You'd do better to react the ammonium nitrate with potassium hydroxide or potassium carbonate in water solution and drive off the resultant ammonia and water by evaporation with gentle warming. NH4NO3 + KOH --> KNO3 + H2O + NH3 2NH4NO3 + K2CO3 --> 2KNO3 + H2O + 2NH3 + CO2 I normally eschew giving out "recipes," but converting ammonium nitrate to saltpeter is probably a step in the right direction for budding pyrotechnicians

Try a butcher or deli where they cure their own meats - assuming you need food grade chemicals. If you recipe is from the Jolly Roger Cookbook then jbuttonsw suggestion would do.

It is now banned almost everywhere because of ridiculous fear of making low grade explosives. Much more powerful, cheaper and easy to make high order explosives can be made from dozens of more readily available supplies so it is a pointless ban made by ignorant politically correct morons.
