Holiday in Russia

Am off to Moscow and St Petersburgh in a week or so. Will on a tour-ish but are there any recommendations of where to go, what to do what to avoid and be careful of. Am travelling on my own so some sort of plan would be useful

The forums are good for information and they do list attractions.

Usual advice regarding carrying money / and wandering off beaten track I would say.
