I am a little clueless with these type of things.

I am thinking ahead for Christmas and there are deals for X-box of £149.99 but then they offer a hard drive for £79.99

Do you need a hard drive and why?

You need a hard drive to save games and downloads etc. As far as i know a hard drive is included anyway, starting fro basic 4GB upto 320GB

So I take it that the external one is if there are lots of games and my son and hubby wants to store lots of movies etc....

Ok, will look at just a basic package and think about the rest on a need to basis :0)
