Many thanks for your birthday greetings two days ago.

My family comingled together and have assembled £140 of vouchers on Amazon for a Kindle. (I do love reading and the prospect of travelling with just the Kindle is alluring)

Would you go for their standard model at £111 or their 3G one at £152?

I have wifi here and most of my cafes I use have it as well. Travel wise, my overseas trips have cut back, but the USA would require covergae, though again I have no issue with wifi coverage on my PC

Do I hold back for their colour model which I have heard is coming....and if so what sort of price am I looking at?

I gather you can download newspapers - the advantage of colour would be for magazines etc....but I can live with b and w, if it is, say £50 plus more than the 3G......

Many thanks in advance.....

Are there any free Kindle books too?

Not wishing to divert you from a Kindle but have you considered a Sony ebook reader?
I looked at a Kindle late last year, but was put off by the fact that any books you purchase can be removed by Amazon for reasons of their own.
loads of free books. personally i would (and have gone for) the 3g one - it was really useful when i was in hospital and there was no wireless.
There's been rumours of a colour one for a while and you could be waiting ages
Hi i dont know much at all about the kindle but from what i heard i think its worth it to pay an extra £12 as you have £140 worth of vouchers already for the 3G Kindle as in the long term i think its worthwhile that depends on how much you read and whether you think you really need the extra 3G i have heard about the kindle 4 which is very likely to have colour but it gives no infomation about the price, i think that the purpose of a kindle is to read not the appearence (colour) so i personally think that it isnt really worth it to pay extra for colour. I am quite sure that some websites offer you free kindle books to download however whether the websites are 100% safe and trust-worthy i am not sure, hopefully that might of helped you and all the best in buying your kindle.

thanks for your input, all of you!
You don't need 3G. You can buy/download your books over wifi at any time.

I love my Sony eReader.

Can you put your own documents on it - I write a lot for technology and also have a novel on the go, as well as another in the planning phase? say a conversion from a .doc or .rtf file?
not sure - you can put pdf's on them
I can on my Sony. I can download documents (or books, music etc) to a memory card and use that in the Sony.
Or connect my Sony to my pc and transfer to the inbuilt memory if I prefer. No wireless or 3G, but I don't need it.
The advantage of the 3g it gives you Free Internet access. It is a limited access but I use it to access Google and Wiki for doing crosswords when WIFI is not available. The keyboard is fiddley but for occassional use when I can't get to a PC it's ok and its free. All the other ebooks charge .
I also bought the protective cover which has a built in light . It also makes it easier to hold especially in bed. As and when a colour Kindle becomes available which is a long way off, it will be much more expensiuve.
PS There are thousands of free books in English and foreign languages.
They are books which are out of copy-write and from new authors who are trying to get known. The Kindle can hold 3500 books and they are always available to you from Amazon.
I agree you should buy the lit cover. Perfect for reading in bed and the cover makes it feel more like a standard book. I got mine at Christmas last year and I still love it. If I am going away I just download lots of books to keep me going. Amazon have lots of free books and ones at 69p and 99p
I have the lit cover for my Sony
Colour models should be in the shops quite soon. That will mean the b&w versions will drop in price.
