No, they are not, unless it's part of their sales pitch. Usually it's your responsibility to dispose of your old stuff. A business would have to pay to take it to the tip so they are quite entitled to charge you if you ask them to take it away.

You may find your local council offer the service at a lower cost.

Agree with the above answers and depending on your local authority, they take larger items away and charge according to their policies which vary from area to area. IF you washing machine is working or could be repaired, you could offer it on Freecycle for free and people will collect it from you. You have to join the group first if you haven't already. You will be surprised at how many people will take them to repair or use for spares.

I thought they had to take it away along with the packaging from the new machine or does this only apply to fridges
