Help with laptop dislay

Hi all, I was beggaring about with the display etc in control panel (Windows xp) and the screne went black with huge icons and writing. WEll I got it back to normal but all the writing under the icons are in blue boxes and I cannot get rid of the blue. Also AB is white with topics in purple at the side, I just ewant it back to normal but don't know what I've done, Please help, If I go to system restore will that delete my new progs.

ps I have restarted laptop but still the same.
