I am currently 6 weeks into a 12 week notice period at my current ...or so i thought.
It came to light last week (just from chatting to colleague) I had miscalculated my notice period and should only be working 10 weeks. I got HR to double check this and they admitted part of an addendum to my contract confirming my reduced notice from a few years ago was not attached, hence they had missed this when i handed it my original notice. They now agree that i only need to work 10 weeks.
As i owe the company a couple of days holiday when i leave I wanted to understand how and if this could be managed before raising with my direct manager.
Anyway, i raised it with her this morning and as i expected didnt get a particularly warm response. I admitted it was my initial error but HR have agreed they missed it too. Work have agreed i can go 2 weeks early if i want but as compromise i said i would one extra week to meet them halfway.
It turns out my HR lady has been given a telling off about this as she should have picked up this issue so now i am feeling bad that she has got into trouble when its not really her fault. People are also being a bit frosty to me when im actually doing them a favour! Makes all the hard work i have done gone to waste! Anyones been in similar situation?
No, but you should be able to include any leave owing to you in your notice period anyway. One of my colleagues leaves at the end of the month but is finishing on the 14th because she is owed 2 weeks' holiday. Are you saying though that you owe them holiday, the other way round? In which case you would normally work a couple of extra days to pay it back, or they dock your end pay by those couple of days.
I owe them 2 days holiday which is not a problem as we agreed that would just be deducted from my last pay. The issue is both HR and I thought my notice was 12 weeks, it is in fact only 10. Now ive told my manager im going earlier, shes come across all put out. The reality is they have 11 weeks of my time so is 5 days making that much difference!? As a gesture of good will ive said i will work one extra week to help them out and do 11 weeks for them instead of 10 but my boss is being a bit stand offish and im doing them a favour!
Well, since i advised i was leaving early, things are back to normal now, think they understand I am actually doing them a favour and could go even earlier if I wanted though trying to help them and do whats best for me too.
Think they were just in panic mode as they cant recruit quick enough!!
