Why is the cut so big?

I had a mole removed on Tuesday on my back, it was 6mm in diameter. However, after taking the dressing off last night I've got a cut approx 2-3 across my back? Why do they need so much? They told me that they were going to cut out the mole and some surrounding skin, but don't understand :S x

Well, it has to be excised with a wide margin of surrounding skin, just in case it is malignant.

Also sometimes it's like an iceberg......what you see on the surface may only be one seventh of the actual lesion.

Don't know.

Smear some Synalar or hyrocortisone cream over the scar twice a day.....don't let other ABers know that i have suggested this as i will get a right "earwigging"........;-)

Many years ago I was involved in a car accident. I was diagnosed with, among other things, a ruptured spleen which required an emergency operation. Although it was 40 years ago I still have a 16 inch scar running diagonally down from my right shoulder round to my navel. It is still quite unsightly but hey, not many guys can boast 16 inches like I can! :)

Could it also be that skin is a bit like T shirt fabric, in that when you cut a hole the edges are pulled back by the general elasticity of the rest?
