Removing a security tag

I bought a pair of shoes today but when I got them home I realised that a tag was still attached to them. I thought that they were supposed to alarm when you leave the shop with them but apparently not!
Anyhow is there some way that I can remove the tag without having to go back to the shop? They were only cheap so don't really merit a journey all of their own!
The tag is one of the type that the assistants put into a mechanism and the back part seperates from the front. Maybe it is some type of magnetic connection?

Aint that the truth Ummm. I suspect DT was trying to do a bit of backpedaling after realising how silly it was to agree with bagpuss.

Anyhoo it doesn't bother me.
I just either have to spend the next 3 days drilling through a security tag or else take myself back to the shop. Who would have thought that such a simple question would have caused upset to some?!

And DT is telling me to get a life - priceless!!

I would ring the shop - once I was horrified to find a security tag still attached to a cream leather jacket I had just purchased at Debenhams. Worried that they wouldn't believe me, I rang them immediately and they told me not to touch it or attempt to remove it, as red dye is often put inside and it would go everywhere, marking the jacket and my furniture! I had to take it back (20 miles!) and they apologised so much as their security system wasn't picking up the signal.

I know Ann - a bit of a nuisance. The shoes didn't cost much so although I wouldn't have considered it for something like a leather jacket, I am tempted to try and remove the tag myself. But I hadn't considered covering myself and the surrounding area with paint!

Although the alarm didn't go off as I left the shop, I bet it would as I returned with them! An example of when a receipt is invaluable!

If you do decide to take the shoes back to the shop, Shivvy, I recommend ensuring that it's the first place you go to on your shopping trip.

A few years ago, I bought a fairly expensive book (£24.99) at a bookshop in Norwich. As I walked out of the door, the alarm went off. I turned round to go back but the assistant said "It's OK, I know you've paid", so I carried on. Unfortunately the bookshop had the same security system as the next store I went to, so I had to explain (both on my way in and on my way out) why their alarm had been triggered. Then the same thing happened in another store. After triggering the alarms (twice) in each of 6 different stores, I was now on the opposite side of the city centre to where the bookshop was but I decided that I'd have to return there. After again setting the alarm off on the way into the bookshop, and queuing for ages (because it just before Christmas) I finally persuaded someone to disable the security tag!

pathetic-alarm went off when i got t-shirt once, as went to self service till-they were ok, just said you go to main till with clothes/bedware/alcohol
