Sorry if this is the wrong area, but have just seen petition which you all must sign. It is to get the government to lower fuel excise duty which is crippling this once great nation's economy. Can I urge you all to sign it and also tell all your friends and family to do so as well?
This is important as it concerns you all.

(Besides on a world scale the difference it would make is miniscule.) High transport costs result in higher prices for goods in the shop, for us all. And hits hard those whose lifestyles require a lot of travelling. When I see folk supporting higher fuel costs I see they are supporting making my life (and the lives of those like myself) more difficult than it already is. Government needs no encouragement to engage in that activity, they seem to revel in doing so already. The answer to any perceived pollution problem is the development of less polluting fuels. Although a gradually reducing population would be the best long term option. Fewer folk tends to mean fewer vehicles and so less pollution.
Removal of a proposed increase is not really the same as creating a shortfall; which would imply that insufficient tax was presently being collected. The petition is there to be read, and of course it doesn't give alternative details of running the country's economy; but tax should always be collected on a fair basis, on the concept of those who have gained the most making the largest contribution to the public kitty. It should not be unfairly loaded on a scapegoat section of the public who can be used as a cash cow for the rest of society.
I still feel that tax should be collected in a different way ie. Cancel the road fund licence work out what the government would be losing & put that figure on to the price of fuel it would then be a fairer system ( the more you use the roads the more tax you pay). You could develop a system of discounts for transport operators which could be claimed back on proof of mileage travelled. Another benefit would be tax being paid by the cheats who at present drive about without a tax disc.
