Heat causes matter to expand.This make them less dense ,and therefore lighter than the surrounding cold matter.This is why they rise.As hot matter rises, it soon loses its heat and becomes relatively colder.Thus, they sink.This rising and sinking of hot and cold fluids is known as convection currents.(which is not related to your syllabus)
