I live in a town where there are a lot of seagulls but lately they have taken to flying over the houses nearly all night making a real racket - it seems one makes a sort of calling noise and the others answer it back - but its getting to the point where its not funny and keeping everyone awake - anyone know why they do this throughout the night?

Blame it on street lights. Song birds in cities can be heard singing during the night for the same reason - they think it's some form of daylight. In the countryside where it's dark, it doesn't happen.
Believe me it can happen in the countryside, because of all the residents
having security lights.
Because they are bastards and should all be shot on sight. Until you have been shat upon by a seagull scoring a direct hit you don't know what pain is. They must have satnavs in their arses. If Churchill had signed them up in September 1939 instead of Spitfires the war WOULD have been over by Christmas!
Probably annoyed at people calling them "seagulls" - it's just "gulls"
It's the babies, queries, I leave at the seaside and this morning at 430, then was a tiny bit of proper Dawn Chorus then the whole world was taken over by seagull shenanigans, I have never heard such a racket. The sort of squealing noise is the huge babies still on the rooftops, calling for food (they are big and grey with long legs, but not flying yet).
Mike11111, so you don't like seagulls either (as well as pigeons) hahaha!!!!
Pigeons I can live with. At least they treat me with some respect!
Tisk ^ - I LIVE at the seaside...
So do I!
Mike, my Tisk was to my own post, not yours! ;-)
sorry Mike11111, I mis took you for another ABer from a 'Pigeon in my garden' thread. Apologies.:(
I think it's the young seagulls that make all the noise. We have the same problem here. Probably most towns have it. It does stop around the end of August/beginning September.
they are GULLS not Sea Gulls!!!!Grrrr

Sorry - GULLS! Most likely the lights as there is a factory warehouse next to me which has large security lights - not a lot to be done - but might resort to action if my car gets a direct hit! Thank you to everyone!
