Hi I have bought a new toilet seat which I had hoped to fit myself, however the wing nuts on the old seat are too hard for me to remove, will spraying them with WD 40 help?

Are they just too tight or are they corroded?
If just too tight, something like a pair of pliers or an adjustable spanner will help to get some leverage. WD40 should help if they're corroded.
Also, wearing a pair of gloves may help.

If they are made of steel which most are... they may well be corroded.
It may sound severe ... but I just get hold of the nut with a pair of molegrips and turn them until they snap off.
It wont take more than a couple of turns.... clean up the porcelain before you fit the new seat.

Thank you for your helpful answers madmaggot and alavalaf, maybe for Butch's sake I should have said that I am a 76 year old widow, lol Janet
lol Janet! can you get some strapping lad in to sort this out?

Butch, you're in trouble, mate!
Janet ............ I have to apologise for Butch ...... er ...... he's from Chatterbank ;o)
As for Sara's obsession with "strapping lads" ...............

As the others have said ....... big pliers/wrench/mole-grips ........... and brute force :o)
MrAsk fitted our last toilet seat, alas, the fitting must be different, the seat wll not stay up when he goes for a 'pee', Consequently we have to warn any visitors that the seat may fall down.

Well thanks all for a good laugh, the user name is cos i didn't realise at the time what it was for although the description "username" was a really good clue lol.I really ought to change it but don't know how. Gran the seat I have now was fitted by my husband several years ago and we have always had that trouble so was hoping this time to get it right. Oh if only i lived near BN, unfortunately I do not and all my friends are as old as me and my children live a long way away. Never mind there is nothing wrong with my present seat apart from the above, I just fancied a change. Anyway folks I just love this site I have had loads of good advice from some lovely people so thanks for taking the trouble and if i ever get it fixed i jwill let you know xx Janet.
One of the questions on 'Have I got news for you' this week was, "What's white and leathery and goes everywhere with Prince Charles?" Apparently the answer is his toilet seat cover, so I got that one wrong. Sorry, Camilla.

Rang my plumber this morning and he came straight round and put new toilet seat on. He had a real job getting the old one off so it wasn't just me!! He only lives a few minutes away he asked me for a tenner and I gave him £15 - cheap at half the price.Think I shall have to stop trying to be independent and call in the experts. Thanks all and sorry Butch for confusing you, I was more amused than offended tho so no worries xxx Janet
I sawed mine off - only took a minute and I'm over 70! The other seat was new but slid from side to side even after I tightened it up as much as possible. Then I sent off for an anti wobble kit from http://toilidfix.co.uk and it took two minutes to fit and I didn't have to touch the seat fittings.
