16ac. In a classically singular country. (6) I?D?U? I can only think of indium but this is a metal so I am not sure how this fits the clue or if it's right any help and an explanation please.

in [first word of clue] = chemical symbol for indium

in latin [that's the classically bit] the singular of a word such as 'india' would be 'indium'

Many thanks Bibblebub it has been puzzling me for some time. I missed out on Latin at school.
it was a very useful subject as I eventually realised, even though I concentrated on science subjects
