A neighbour has complained to the local authority about a minor alteration to the outside of my house. Do I have the right to know the identity of this neighbour?
The whole idea of this kind of thing is that you are anonymous. Otherwise no-one would ever do it would they? Could cause a great deal of upset, even murder.
I don't believe that you have any right to know who, has put in a complaint about any alterations that you have done to your own home.
I think that you may have an idea whom it is though but unless you've erected a a ten ft' snowman (or Santa) on your lawn this early in the year then maybe they have a valid point.
Sometimes you have to have planning permission for even a small thing. It is always wise to check with the local authority so that if the neighbour complains you know you are in the right. The planning department have to inform anyone who would be affected by what you planned to do and they would have had a chance to object at that stage before you have gone to expense and bother doing whatever it was. Can you tell us what it was or do you want to keep it anonymous?
Peter Pedant - in planning enforcement, the complainant is always kept confidential, otherwise people wouldn't complain. It may have been a phone complaint. Even if it was in writing, even if the original poster can claim a copy as a named subject, the complainant details will be redacted.
