why! when boiling egyption cotton pillow cases do they look dirtier than b4.
my pillow cases had a couple of marks wich would not come out in an ordinary wash so i decided to boil them in soda crystals for half an hour or so and was horrified when i took them out.they were terrible BUT as soon as i rubbed bleach into them and i mean literally just rubbed bleach in with no effort whatsoever.all the stains dissapeared. is there something in the egyptian cotton??

Depending on the origin of the stains, the boiling may have cooked the stain rather than broken it up. Egyptian cotton takes new dye (eg a stain) very thirstily, so the best way to treat is to first rub in undiluted laundry iquid, directly onto the stain, ensuring it is soaked right in, then soak in cold water for at least half a day. if you can give it a few poundings while it soaks, say with a plunger, this forces the water and detergent deep into the fibre. Then wash as for whites and see how you go.

You will have probably boiled off the white dye and left the material in its natural colour state which is grey. Vanish is good for stains as this can be used on a low temperature setting.
