Well the 'Children's Day' part, gets the Notting Hill Carnival off to a good start.

Only 53 arrests for a variety of offences including drugs possession, public order, theft, criminal damage, robbery and assault, with more than 5,500 police officers being deployed.

Puts a typical banned EDL protest into insignificance, it would seem.

Nice of those 53 numbnuts to converge in one place today. Saves a lot of resources.

170 arrests so far out of a million people. I don't think that's out of line with what you'd get in a city of a million people (unless they were all EDL, of course). The figure seems slightly down on the last couple of years.
If they had 5500 police outside the Tottenham ground it would have stopped any potential trouble makers.
..but they couldn't, rov - the riots were still kicking off all over the place, far better that the police deal with that than marshal a football match.
Futher to aog not having a day off, the MOBO awards are in Glasgow this year so I look forward to aog posting his usual thread asking why there's not a white version but this time, linking it to the English subsidising Scots folk...

On that logic, they should cancel the Premier League and Championship as football matches tie up thousands of police officers every weekend.
rov1100 - just dont like black people,innit

The Tottenham football match was not cancelled because of potential trouble but because the 500 police officers who normally oversee it every fortnight had to be deployed elsewhere.
that's Music of Braveheart Origin, is it, TCL?

gromit, perhaps the Met thought it better to be safe than sorry. If they had two coppers on duty and there had been lots of trouble, then everyone would moan why weren't there more on duty, damned if they do, damned if they don't.

/// London Mayor Boris Johnson issued a rallying call before the festivities began to ‘let the true spirit of London shine through’ – with the hope that the event would help heal the wounds left by the riots.///

Heal the wounds?????????

/// He added: ‘It’s right that the carnival goes ahead so we can show the world that the overwhelming majority of London’s people are decent, law-abiding citizens who respect the law, love their city and want to celebrate our vibrant, diverse and historical culture.’ ///

These are not very nice pictures to show the world, Boris.
well they couldn't all behave could they, i mean that would be a bloody miracle. Lets face it, many enjoy the carnival, those that don't stay away.
Of course, there are no stabbings in inner city London the rest of the year.
Gromit, or anywhere else for that matter.
