Brucey The Bug

Brucey The Bug has been jumping all over the place when he spots some food 3 feet 7 inches West of his position (he is facing North). He wants to get to the food as quickly as possible in the minimum number of jumps. He realizes that he cannot jump West at this point. Suddenly he exclaims "I've got it. I'll only have to jump 4 times to get to the food." The rules are: 1.Brucey's world is flat, 2. He can only jump, not walk, crawl, etc, 3. He cannot turn around, 4. He cannot jump less than one inch or more than 500 feet per jump, 5. He can only jump North, South, East or West, 6. There is nothing & no-one else to help him, 7. Once he starts in a direction he must jump 4 times before he can change direction.

Why did Brucey have to take precisely 4 jumps to get to the food with a minumum expenditure of energy?
