Merc 200TE cutting out

A friend of mine who is visiting has a K reg Merc 200TE (auto) and it has been cutting out ie. the engine just stops.
This happens when the car is fully warmed up and has been working fine on the motorway but upon arrival at say, a set of lights just conks out.
He lives in a fairly remote place and his local garage has been unable to pinpoint the problem. This has happened before apparently and a previous mechanic identified the fault and said it was to do with some sort of sensor/probe (?) but he is unable to remember what it was and who the mechanic was.
Any ideas ?

My mechanic diagnosed shorting in the Distributor and the power leads from there to the spark plugs. result new leads and Distributor cap and now no problems at all. If you need to go this route I would Google the parts required as getting them from Mercedes would be a very expensive outlay.
I think the mechanic is referring to the top dead centre sensor which affects the control unit, but this, as far as I remember, would not account for the engine cutting out when running, but it sure will affect restarting a warm engine. I had a lot of problems with a 280 TE, having to eventually fit a new control unit, (which is effectively the computer) and rather pricey.
