How was Jimmy Stewart saved?

I know this is a bit petty to quibble like this since Vertigo was deemed just about the best of Hitchcock`s film but I`ve always wondered how our hero, who was hanging by a bending gutter, was saved. There was no-one else there except the villain who was running away and it must have been impossible for Jimmy Stewart to pull himself up onto the roof. Any suggestions anyone?

It sounds like one of those miracle cliff hanger things where they leave the hero suspended and then all of a sudden, like a miracle the hero is saved without any explanation. I didn't see the film myself, but would like to now that you have wetted my appetite.

I suppose bednobs is right, one of those things we never find out. Starbuckone you`ve missed a superb film & Stewart & Doris Day were great in The Man Who Knew Too Much. They really don`t make them like that these days. Neti, maybe I can unconfuse you if you tell me what you didn`t get. Thanks, y`all.
