My friend started using 2 Tablespoons of Mule Team Borax (laundry booster)
and 2T baking soda instead of expensive dishwasher detergent. There are lots of recipes of such on the internet. She reports excellent results, the insides of dishwasher is cleaners, dishes came very clean.........and she saved money.

Does that mean we have been conned by marketing people to spend money on dishwasher detergent when we can substitute other more affordable products. I would be interested in someone's else's opinion if they achieved the same results. I haven't tried it yet.

I'm sure - there's been a TV programme on here recently about what's in commercial brands, and what else we could use. Kim and Aggie the cleaners are always using stuff like borax - no need for "a different cleaner for every surface". Bananas skins and newspaper can be used for cleaning - marketing does't tell us that!
Are you in the US, nohorn? Those brands aren't familiar to me in the UK.

Yes I am, you are right. 20 mule team borax.........Arm & Hammer baking soda are the brands here.
Anyone know where you can get that borax over here, wouldn't mind trying that in my dishwasher.
