I'm just struggling to understand why you felt the need to mention they were Eastern Europeans?

For example, would you have said "I'm in the library, surrounded by Nigerians stinking of booze"?

Indeed they do. But they work hard. Work hard and play hard, not too much wrong with that. ;-)

(And I have come across the odd couple of cats that are quite bearable. But don't you ever tell anyone I said that)

Completely different work ethic to us - Basically, it's because they don't expect anything unless they work for it!!
