Mind you, Wednesday's Bill and Ben was fairly tame compared with Tuesday's offering from Watch With Mother. I used to lie awake at night wondering what Andy Pandy, Teddy and Looby Loo got up to after they had all jumped into the basket and pulled down the lid.
I went on a schools cruise and won a prize by dressing up as Andy Pandy! Shudder to think about it now. I also used to listen to the radio (or wireless in those days) to Listen with mother. dingdy dong Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin........ It was just before Womans Hour I think.
And the narrator, Daphne Oxenford, is still alive at the age of 92. She is also an actress; amongst other things she made appearances in Midsomer Murders as Joyce Barnaby's mother.
And don't forget Fridays with The Woodentops and the biggest spotty dog you ever did see. Never keen on Thursdays; Rag, Tag and Bobtail just didn't do it for me.
I only watched Bill and Ben and Andy Pandy, and of course listened most days to Listen With Mother. Went on to listen to Childrens Hour, which led to me broadcasting on Childrens Hour and then working at the Beeb on leaving school and for the next ten years. Very enjoyable it was too. I couldnt believe that they also paid me to be there!
To be honest Mike I dont remember that. I do have a lot of early knowledge of the BBC as I worked for a number of years in the press office, so could even hum the signature tune to Dick Barton, although that was really well before my time!
