I have just paid £142 for a Dell 1250c laser printer.What as disaster!! I have just found out that the cost of 4 replacement cartridges is nearly £300. I only got about 500 prints from the cartridges installed in the printer when it was delivered.
The average cost for 4 cartridges for a Dell 1320c is about £70. This appears to be the price for other manufacturer's printer cartridges.The Dell 1320c delivers 1000 prints.
The cartridges for the 1250c cannot be refilled as they contain a microchip.
So, I now have to buy another printer.... probably a Brother

So you didn't think to check what the cost of the consumables would be before buying it then?

You can get refurbished high capacity toners for that which should give you at least 2-3 times the yield of the standard ones.

but laser printers always look expensive compared to ink jets when you're buying the consumables, you need to ignore the overall cost and work out the cost per page to get a realistic comparison.

Just buy replacement printer when ink runs out .. on eBay.
Overall, you will be quids in .. in the end!

This guy is selling a complete toner cartridge set (compatible not original) for £20.90 including p&p – which seems quite reasonable.

It is common practice for both ink jet & laser printers to be sold with low filled consumables – as this is where they make their money.

Remember that manufactures will normally quote typical prints expected from a cartridge based on 5% area coverage. If you are printing photos (at 100% coverage) you will need to divide the figure by 20.

You can also buy replacement microchips to allow refilling - if you like getting messy.

Even at the prices given 6,200 prints for £70 is only just over 1p (of toner) per print.

Remember that you will have to pay import duty on these.

You should also be aware of the cost of other consumables. The imaging drum and fuser are also significant. In some printers the fuser is not user servicable.

Take great care with non genuine toners. I have seen a Dell laser fail after a non-genuine toner cartridge was put through it. The toner feed section began to leak toner very badly and I suspect this was due to the toner in the refill not flowing properly.
