why do bulls need to be castrated?-are they an extremly oversexed animal or is it to do with controlling overtly aggressive temprement?

They are usually castrated because artificial insemination of cows is far quicker and more convenient - for the cows' owners, not the bull obviously!

Two reasons, actually... firstly, only a few bulls are required for breeding purposes. Herds of 200 cows and heifers here in the western U.S. require only 2 or 3 bulls. Actually, with the onset of artificial insemination, maintaining a herd of bulls is nolonger required. (Other than breeding purposes, they are uesless) So, most are castrated simply because they are not needed. Secondly, and equally as important... steers, young, castrated bulls, gain weight more rapidly than do heifers and certainly more quickly than a randy bull. So for marketing purposes, steers bring a better price than equal age heifers...
