Welsh Mining Tragedy: Is It Just Me...
..who feels there is a lot more being made of it in comparison to other similar events? I don't wish to sound cynical or de-sensitised but when this:

tragedy happened it barely got a mention. There was certainly not the amount of media coverage as for the miners, whose loved ones are obviously devastated and understandably so.
I could understand the level of coverage had the death toll been greater but I'm just perplexed at the media frenzy/circus that appears to have swamped this tragedy. One report on the BBC last night even focussed on a bag of rubbish from meals that had been left by rescue teams who had been working at the site.
Or, as I asked, is it just me?

your dad is right fliptheswitch there was 1 incident here in stoke on trent and this happened in the 40s and there has only just been a memorial dedicated to the brave men and boys who died...please google ''the sneyd pit disaster'' i think about 56 men and boys died in a huge pit explosion as they worked on new years day [a day miners never worked on because it was deemed as unlucky] to help the war effort...

Whereas I don't wish to deter from the very sad loss and devastation for the miners families, I do think it is not only the media that has made too much of this accident, but also the politicians.
Peter Hain MP launched an Appeal Fund to help support those families.
It has been said that Fishing and Farming are more dangerous than mining, but no body mentioned the Armed Forces, they do not get an Appeal Fund set up to support their families when some of them are killed.
There will be some that will say they don't have to join the services, and if they do they know the risks involved, well one could say that about any job, even mining, fishing or farming.

If they don't it is maybe because such appeals and help already exist.
After all, sadly, we know people are likely to die on active service.
Fatal mining accidents are luckily comparatively rare.
