HP PSC 1400 printer not scanning

I've acquired a printer/copier/scanner from my sister. She says it worked perfectly for her. It prints okay, but when I scan something all I get it a black image. Any suggestions?

I have a HP 1200 and scanning is difficult now, just keep trying, I go to the HP Director in progs and try from there.
