My "Y" Reg Subaru Impreza

Has developed a scraping noise when I am turning slowly to the right. It doesn't happen at normal speed, just when I'm say, leaving a carpark. Any ideas what it might be?

Hi Eddie. I had a rear wheel bearing replaced not long after I bought it and it's not making the booming noise that that one was making last year. It has onlt done £62K miles.

Wheel Bearing play (jack it up and test wiggle)
Tyre catching trim (look underneath and around on full lock)

Does it both ways (L&R)?

No albags, seems to be just to the right.

That could be N/S/F wheel bearing need checking then first .. or tyre rub front NS inner wheel bay, or rub on OS rear inner wheel bay.

Rears are always oversized for the weight and work they have to do .. so they last for ages, normally.

Check thebrake disc backplate is not rubbing on the disc.

Thanks for that Toureman. I noticed that the posts were dated 2005. My car is 2001 so it could well be that. It is definitely a scraping noise of metal on metal. I hope it's not too expensive to fix.

That's the ruddy REAR brakes. We were talking about front brakes!

I have worked on a few .. and the rear bearing has to be pretty well gone to get this problem .. hence the 'leaning' into corners quote.
Just get it jacked up and turn lock to lock and look .. This will be easy to find.

Oh you silly man.
You should know that it's highly unlikely to get a rub of a REAR disc on a caliper or plate when turning out.

I would have sorted the car out in the time you were searching Google about backplates and rear bearings.

Having said that, the last one I replaced on a Scooby was causing brake to bind and get warm .. but it was (along with MOST cars that develop a worn rear bearing) pretty noisy while driving.
