Having just watched the BBC programme on Royal Palaces, which tonight featured Holyrood in Edinburgh, I am still at a loss to understand why there is a German Royal family sitting in Buck house rather than the descendants of the Stuart line.

Easy. The Stuarts were Roman Catholic - and as such not allowed. The powers that be sought a protestant heir after Queen Anne died and they decided that the House of Hanover suited as it was descended from Elizabeth of Bohemia a daughter of James the Sixth and First.

Not illogical, but practical for the times. As has been said above, George I was a descendant of the Stuarts via James I, but a protestant.

Whoever was in the government at that time I suppose rich. Probably the barons and suchlike - I don't think you should have asked me this, because I don't really know - an ignoramus if you like. Makes interesting reading though.

Just the "Establishment" of that time. The developed a severe case of the vapours because it was possible that a Roman Catholic could become monarch.

the Stuarts weren't all Catholic, just James II. This wasn't popular (though not actually illegal at the time, I don't think); so various lords and parliamentarians invited William of Orange to be king (he was married to James's daughter), and James fled. His son and grandson - the old and young pretenders - did try to raise armies and recapture the throne, but failed.

Starbuckone, the English had already got rid of the royal family - James's father - but this was also felt to be unpopular and has not been tried again

he didn't confess it as such, he was received into the Roman Catholic church on his deathbed. Wikipedia says it isn't clear whether it was his own idea or if he was even consious of what was happening.

well that is Charles III (or George VII) out of the way, he may not be Catholic but isn't he Camillatholic? Rules him out therefore and the Americans and young Brits get their way - i.e. the baton passes over to Will 5. However I do not care as long as that current (awful) Archbish of Canterbury is well out of the way when it comes to placing the crownon the royal tete and spilling the oil.......

As regards Catholic/C of E, we should remember that many believe the only reason the C of E even exists is because Henry VIII wanted to get his leg over Ann Boleyn! I like the American phrase, "Helluva way to run a railroad!" but that, surely, was a "Helluva way to run a nation!"

QM, there were any number of reasons, that was one, but Henry was already in disagreement with the Church, which comes as no surprise, given the sway they held over the Monarchy and the people.
