For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.supply and demand: the south is more expensive because more people want to live there, so there's competition for houses especially; up north, if you want to sell things to poorer people you have to keep prices down or they won't sell. (No offence intended to anyone north or south.) Having said that, I was surprised to read the other day that there's actually more unemployment in London than elsewhere, because jobs is one of the things people go south for.
Weather may play a part too: you just don't get bitter winters in the south any more (fingers crossed), and London is always a degree or two warmer than the rest of the region, as big cities often are. This does play a part in quality of life.
