Toilet trained Slug?

One morning I woke up early, bleary eyed for work and made my way barefoot into the bathroom. As I approached the washbasin next to the toilet I just happened to notice I was about to step on something. It was a 3" long slug!! Wondering how it got there, I followed it's slimy trail back, up two steps to the landing, along the skirting board into our bedroom, up the bedroom wall behind the curtain and out through the open window. I went downstairs and outside and noticed the trail down the wall and along the back yard. The trail wasn't there the day before, and the next day it was washed away by heavy rain.

Two questions came to mind - firstly why, when slithering along the yard, did it suddenly decide to 'make a dash for the window' - was it the urge to go?

And secondly, as it did that journey in about 5 hours, how far can they travel in a day?

Aw, I've done that - they sneak in downstairs and hide in the pattern on the carpet, bleah. They move pretty fast when they get going!

A friend of mine was fed up of the damage slugs do in his garden, so he sharpened the point of a cane and would spear them and then flick them in the air over the neighbours garden. One morning, a neighbour of his mentioned how sick and tired he was of crows. When asked why he said they keep dropping slugs on his greenhouse roof, he could see the little hole where the beak had pierced them. My friend didn't dare admit it was him, but he started to flick them the other way.

Not all slugs at pests in the garden, some of the larger ones are actually beneficial. I tend to pick the small slugs and snails up and deposit them in the field at the bottom of the garden. One day, I was weeding the front garden and noticed dozens of snails in crevises in the front wall, so I put them all in a container and, as an experiment, marked some of them with a yellow dot to see if they returned. I took them and put them in the field.

Some days later I noticed some of them had returned, and, on mentioning it to my family, my young daughter admitted that she had felt sorry for them being far away from home and had collected them the following day and returned them to the garden whilst I was at work.
