Have you got any approximate years for their births?
Question Author
william was born in 1839 and sarah was born in 1840 or 41

terry if they married in Scotland in 1865 they should have a marriage certificate, I am sure Civil Registration stated in Scotland that year. If so, it will contain their parents information at least, it is a while since I taught family history and some of the info has drained from my brain, but Scottish civil registration marriage certificates contain alot more info than ours, I am just too lazy to go check this morning. Anyway, if you have the cert. or can access it on line, you will have alot more info.

Civil reg. in England and Wales only commenced July 1837 and though it was compulsory, failure to comply was not finable for a number of years, and so you may be better going for baptism.

Have you checked the census's as the place of birth is usually on there.
