American style fridge.

I bought a new American style fridge at the end of March this year.Now it's showing it needs a new water filter. I've looked on line and found that a new one costs £28. Three questions. 1. Can I clean the old filter. 2. Should It need a water filter so soon.( I don't live in a hard water area ) 3 Can I get a water filter any cheaper ?.

The attached website says it only requires changing every six months. If you're not in a hard water area it's probably good for a year.

Living, as I do, in the U.S., I'm not familiar with this brand. How does it notify you of a required filter change? If the trigger for the notification is simply a passing of time, then it's even more probable that it doesn't require changing snce the fridge most likely set in the warehouse for 6 months or more, assuming it was manufactured in Asia someplace...

I appreciate your reply clanad.But the fridge brings up a little marker light when the filter needs changing.So it's machine. v. man.not a case of later in the year !.
