A convicted murderer serving a life sentence is allowed day release to work as a lorry driver, and has weekend release as rehabilitation.
He earns £18 a year and commits 11 armed robberies.
He is only caught when he accidentally reverses in to a police car and he is recognised from a wanted poster.

This would make a great Ealing comedy, but my question is - do prisoners who are earning good money on day release pay for the board and lodging?

Blimey! Is that right Eddie? No wonder people aren't scared of going to prison.

I used to live in Grimsby and many people I knew had a way of life I couldn't understand. For example- they never bought a TV licence. When they were caught for the umpteenth time they never went to court or paid the fine. They were then arrested for non-payment of fines and sent to Lincoln Prison for one month. They did two weeks for good behaviour and the fines were annulled. Then they did the same again.

It was the same with motoring. I knew many people who bought a car for £50 (often from the scrapyard) and never bothered with tax, insurance or MoT. Some had never even passed a test or had been banned so often they'd lost count! When they were caught yet again they just preferred to do the time. The local Evening Telegraph announced one day that the police were no longer going to stop people they knew had an illegal car or no licence. They said that one in three cars in Grimsby were illegal and they couldn't spend all their time on traffic offences as they wouldn't do anything else! They would only prosecute if a vehicle was involved in an accident or another offence.

Many people I knew had been in and out of jail like that since they were 13. They said the only people who should worry about prison were child molesters and those who beat up little old ladies. I was also told that going to prison was great as they all knew and greeted each other and everyone were mates. They said they got three meals a day and they could play football, pool and other games.

I'm not surprised now! Something's got to change surely!
I forget to mention.....

People used to tell me I was stupid for paying for a TV licence, car insurance and bothering to keep my car roadworthy and MoT'd. That's because my only brush with the law was two speeding tickets in 1986!

No and nor should they - the State has responsibility for providing board and lodging for those sent to prison; would you say a player who broke his leg on the football field should pay for his hospitalization?
