If the vase holds, say, about a quart of water, place 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, 2 tabelspoons sugar and 1 teaspoon of liquid bleach (used in laundry) in the water and stir until sugar is dissolved. Cut the rose stems at a slant, as maggie01 states... but hold them under water as you make the cut with sharp scissors. Take them out of the water after cutting and place them immediately into the prepared vase. Try to place them in sunlight, if you can.
