I have recently heard two geographical statements which although I didnt contest at the time,made me decide to check on the forum

They are (1) that the Statue of Liberty is not in NY but New Jersey,and (2) that the island of Cyprus is not in Europe,but Asia

Can any of you knowleadgeable guys and gals out there,either confirm these questions or expose them as false before I make an idiot of myself?

In terms of Cyprus being in Asia- the confusion may arise from the fact that part of Cyprus "belongs" to Turkey. Since Turkey is split across Europe & Asia, with the capital being in the Asian side, this may be what is confusing.

Cyprus is a member of the EU, so must be deemed to be European

With regards to the Statue of Liberty, the National Parks website states "Liberty Island (where the Statue is located) is a federal property located within the territorial juridiction of the State of New York"

The confusion here seems to be that Liberty Island lies on the New Jersey side of the boundary line separating New York from New Jersey. Despite this, it is classed as being in New York. Even more confusingly, the submerged part of the island belongs to New Jersey.

Maps of New York add to the confusion, as they draw the boundary line between New York & New Jersey, down the middle of the Hudson river - due to Liberty Island being closer to New Jersey, it appears on the "wrong" side of the line.

The AA Illustrated World Atlas states that Cyprus is in Asia. Several other books on my shelves all agree (and a simple look at a map confirms it).

Scubadiver's statement that Cyprus must be in Europe because it's an EU member state just doesn't hold water. Does this mean that half of Turkey will suddenly jump into Europe when EU membership is achieved? Morocco has already had some very preliminary discussions about EU membership - would Scubadiver then say that Morocco could become part of Europe?

And as for the Statue of Liberty, as any true Francophile knows, it's in Paris! :

buenchico - I have checked things out further re Cyprus and strictly speaking you are correct, Cyprus does geographically lie in Asia, but politically & culturally is considered part of Europe ( check Wikipedia).

This is a similar situation to the second part of my answer, re the Statue of Liberty - the difference between geography & "jurisdiction".

If you think the Statue of Liberty is in Paris ( & I have seen the one you mention), then you obviously need to get out more ;-)

Also, 97% ( not just half) of Turkey would need to "jump" if and when they enter the EU!!
