Royal Bank of Scotland merger with Natwest......

I am just finishing sorting out my fathers will and he had shares in natwest when they were taken over by RBS. He said he got a really good deal and that in 5years time there was another �1000 to come. He said make sure you get it if I die. Does anybody know when the merger was and how to go about getting this money. Thanks in anticipation
