Firefox using too much memory.

Since installing AVG 2012 it seems,

I occasionally get a warning popping up on the L/H side of my screen for a nano second, informing me that Firefox is using too much memory, and that I should close it down and start again, if I wish it not to slow down.

Has anyone else experienced this?

No, but I got fed up with Firefox forever failing to close properly (disappear from screen, but still running in background), getting slower and slower, changes to the User Interface, constant updates breaking addons, etc, etc.

I really think that they've lost their way.

I now use Chrome as my default browser.

I was surprised by this as well AOG! I personally though AVG shouldn't be telling me I'm using too much memory and should keep it's nose out.

Equally, have you been able to exit it at all? I've found it denies this of me even from task manager!

In terms of losing their way it feels AVG may be on the same path as Firefiox.

The latest Firefox manages memory much better, in my opinion. I'm using 7.01

Same here Hc. AOG click Help > About to see which version you're on. An update may be worthwhile.

Bad memory management was always a downside of firefox, but the later releases have pretty much fixed it.

I've had the same thing a couple of times, but ignored it, because I don't believe it. Nothing has happened. (I'm on Firefox 7.0.1.)

I agree sometimes does not close properly.

AVG and Norton have resource/memory monitoring of apps (called Performance Monitoring). This is to help detect infections. You can turn off in settings (in Norton) .. Likewise in AVG, I would have hoped.

Removing the AVG Popup

Please be informed AVG 2012 includes a new AVG Advisor feature. It is designed to warn user that there could be a memory leak in your browser (in a script or a flash within a visited website, respectively). AVG records an average amount of memory used by a browser and is regularly checking the value during browser usage. In case the memory consumption is significantly increased, user is informed about possible memory leak. Browser re-start is recommended in such scenario.
If you would like to disable AVG Advisor you may proceed as follows:
- Open AVG user interface and press F8.
- Select the Appearance item in the left tree.
- Untick the Display AVG Advisor performance notifications option
- This will disable both the notifications and memory usage monitoring.
- Click OK to save any changes.

Talk about a redundant feature!

What's the point of AVG telling you that a program is using too much memory? If you're not tech savvy you're not going to understand why or really what to do about it. If you are tech savvy then you'll know how much memory each application is using anyway. So instead people then need advice on why it's using x amount of memory or instructions on how to turn the feature off.

Silly. AVG used to be great but then they had all those problems with Vista and I haven't trusted the brand since.

ED Regarding my version of Firefox I am using 4.01 I'm afraid, it keeps asking me to upgrade but I do believe the latest version doesn't support all add-ons.

You seriously should upgrade, AOG, the later versions fixed the memory problems and will make you computer far more responsive while FF is running due to that.

What addons are you using AOG that are particularly important to you?

How can I check what add-ons I have.

I know I have Google Toolbar, which has all my newspaper buttons on.

I also have spell check.

Both of those are compatible with the latest Firefox.
I can't remember FF 4 but you can see what add ons you have by clicking Firefox - add ons, or Firefox - tools - add ons
