C: needs scanning

A friend asks this:

"It froze, so I turned it off. Then it said my c: disk needed scanning and a fault was found and now I can't get passed this so can't start it anymore! :( I need help!"

Usual steps to take?

Or you could boot off of something else, such as a CD. You don't have to boot from your hard drive.
