Horrible man

Just been to the shops where there was a family group of what I am assuming was dad, mum, gran and little boy of about 18 months. The little boy was having a minor meltdown and when he was safely in the trolley (and behaving lovely) the dad said to the gran 'hasn't he just got a face you could slap'! I couldn't believe my ears, if he says things like that in public I would hate to think what he says or does in private. Someone should slap his face.

Sorry for the rant, just made me so cross and sad.

Some families interact with each other differently to others. Some are very sensitive and touchy feely and some shout, swear and broadside at one another given the least provocation. I recall a woman who lived near us screeching like a banshee ' I'll bog wash ya yer little f3cker if yo8u don't f3cking shut up'- but in honesty the child didn't die, she was a lovely woman and no-one could have loved each other more than those two. On the other hand many a quiet respectable middle class type have been known to batter the bejaysus out of their kids- child abuse is not class specific nor is anything you saw indicative of anything wrong- the kid had a tantrum and the father made a comment- doesn't mean he's ever laid a finger on a child.

BUT....some kid DO have slapable faces.

Fat, chubby cheeks, inane grin on their face, stubborn look with doting parents.................slapable faces.

Oh absolutely, Red. I have definitely been frustrated many times. I don't think I've ever said something along those lines in public though. You're right of course, none of us knows what goes on behind closed doors, and this type of comment may be a "normal" jokey thing.

I've just thought of something, after reading Sqads comment.
My sisters little girl has ALWAYS got a frown on, and is really "miserable" looking. I know that sounds awful, but that's the only way to describe her. I've just remembered that my own Mother has previously said she's got a face you could slap! Lol. I take it all back!

Im now going to have to make sure no-ones in earshot when i say "if you two dont behave I'm going to bang your heads together". Its a phrase my mum always used and yet its never been done by her or by me.

Hi all - I didn't say he was a child abuser or that no one else speaks to their children this way. I was merely commenting on something that I had seen/heard which made me cross and sad. As others have said, no one knows what goes on behind closed doors. People used to go on about how lovely my mother was, with no idea of how mentally cruel she could be or of the beatings she liked to dole out.

Whenever I see or hear a child crying I want to pick them up and cuddle them. If I did I would probably get arrested. How do these awful people think they would feel if they were dragged out, tired and irritable to sit in a trolley and do shopping they are not the least bit interested in. No wonder the poor little mites cry. I know what it is like to have to shop with children but they need some love and comforting not shouting and swearing. This morning in Morrison's there was one little lad crying and then later when having lunch in Rajani's there was another lot. I had to try to shut the noise out so that I would not be tempted to pick them up. Oh well, there you are - c'est la vie.

There are a few children I have referred to with the expression - "he's got a face I wouldn't tire of punching". Thankfully never my own children and I wasn't joking......

It's not an uncommon expression, sher - to me it wouldn't mean that the child would actually ever get a slap, it just means "jeez, look at the face on it". I use an expression myself "I'd like to smack her with a wet haddock" but I wouldn't actually DO it.
