Did a search in Google for "packard bell glue" and there are loads of other people getting similar problems (going back to 2004).
I had a read through some of them and could not find anyone have gave an answer that solved the problem.
This one below said it was caused by the hard disk not having an active partition. When you have 2 or more partitions on your hard disk one of them has to be set as the active partition so that Windows can be installed on it.
I am not saying that is your problem, just a possible.

Can you give a brief background as to why you are doing a recovery. It will help in solving your problem.
Have you, for example, replaced the hard hard disk in the laptop and put a new one in?
Some web sites seem to indicate that Packard Bell laptops have a hidden recovery partition on the hard disk which contains the recovery image of Windows.
If you have replaced the hard disk you will have lost this recovery partition. Maybe that is your problem?
You may need to format the hard drive first and create a partition before the recovery will work.
Do you happen to know if the recovery CD actually contains the Windows image itself, or does the CD just "boot" the computer then use the recovery image that is supposed to be on the hard disk.

It looks as if installing from your mate's disc has cleared some hidden info
this on the PB forum
look at the step by step
here are pages from 2004-5 which refer specifically to the dates you quote
its reasonably well described
here are some more recent tips
http://forum.packardbell.com/en/viewtopic.php? p=227065&sid=430697f5acf53436ea2cc1164c01384b
from what is says ... it looks like glue is the system imaging software (or process) pb use
(all the biggies have their own)
and this one looks particularly un slick ... the best would do the end to end process automatically.

I have had same problem, when replaced failed hard drive on Packard Bell laptop and tried to restore system from recovery DVD.
But running "RELOADHS.BAT" from root folder of DVD solved the problem.
And the source of "RELOADHS.BAT" is...(in case you don't have it in your recovery disk)

\drivers\exths.exe /importextbin:\exths.bin
\drivers\tattoo.exe /importbin:\tattoo.bin
