I have completed grid and have the four unclued entries, and after much searching (about which I know nothing) I can see 'acanthus' in top row, any hints re the other thematic answer and/or the hidden message for the third item much appreciated.

The other thematic item is similarly (though not identically) related to one of the other unclued entries, also vertically orientated. The hint to the hidden message is given by the horizontal unclued entry, which also refers to the spacial relationship mentioned above.
G, you may very well have got there by now, but here's another hint. The three unclued down entries are all types of the unclued across entry, as I imagine you've deduced. You've found one relevant word in the top row and, if you look it up in Chambers, you'll see that it mentions a connection with one of the three types. In row 2 you'll find a similar word and a similar connection with one of the remaining two types.
I myself just can't be bothered doing the word-search, so I haven't done the drawing, but I imagine - though I may be desperately wrong - the illustration will probably look like the THIRD type so far undealt with. See it by googling.
Good luck. In fact - if you do finish - come back and tell me all about it! (I won't be submitting.)

You are spot on Quizmonster, though I'd assumed that the vertically placed unclued entries represent the structures upon which the horizontally placed unclued entry sits - not that it affects the illustration particularly. There is a link (with spoilers removed) to an excellent exposition of the geometry of the illustration on the main AB thread for this puzzle, so DON'T look till you are ready to give up.
Mysterons. I have been stumped by the final stage for two days!! I have the message, the two unclued words, the geometry of the final illustration but cannot make a word from the cells from my sketch. Am I right in starting at the cell immediately left of the lower unclued word? Any help much appreciated.
