Computer and printer don't know each other any more!

Please, any ideas? I was printing some minutes out and there was a paper jam - sorted quickly,as usual,- following which I can no longer get a printout of anything from the computer. The photocopier itself is working.I get a message :"Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current computer setup".Also the name of printer is OneNote2007, where it should be my photocopier.At times,before I realised this, it kept telling me OneNote was printing something,but no joy anywhere.I have HP photosmart 2575 All-In-One and an ACER Aspire laptop. No previous problem.

Switch everything off. Unplug your printer's USB lead. Switch on again and then plug the lead back in. Try printing something.

If that doesn't work, run System Restore (from Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools) to take your computer's registry back to the last restore point prior to the problem occurring.

You haven't said which operating system.
In XP, if my HP laser is turned off, the only way to get it to communicate with the computer again is to restart the computer with the printer already up and running.

First, Shut down the computer.
Turn off the printer
Turn on the printer
turn on the computer.
Go to printers & faxes
Right-click on the HP printer, then click on set default printer.

If you have XP, try my method before you try Chris's as it's based on specific experience with XP and HP printer. If it doesn't work then try Chris's, which is more generic

Thank you Chris. My son and I did the first thing last night,among a
million other hopeful tries.Am grateful for such a quick response and will try stage 2. As you realise I am still a computer novice in some ways. Wil the systems restore move affect anything else on the computer?

System Restore is perfectly safe. It won't alter or delete anything which you've downloaded or created since the restore point which you use. (e.g. you won't lose recent emails or documents).

However if you've installed any new programs, between the restore point and now, you'll need to install them again. Your anti-virus program might also need to update again but it should do that automatically anyway.

Have got into systems restore. then it says I don't have a systems restore point. Then it offers me thre discs?? What do I want please?

My response related specifically to XP, but it would be worth trying with Vista. As I said, the HP printer driver has a tendency to stop talking to the printer if the printer is powered down or develops a fault.

That's odd!

What you should see is the option to 'Restore My Computer to an Earlier Time' (which you select and then click 'Next'). Then you should see a calendar, with some dates highlighted in bold type. (Those are your restore points). Click on the most recent of those dates (prior to the problem occurring) and then on 'Next'.

'Printers & faxes' can be accessed via Start > Settings. (You might need to go via 'Control Panel' as well. I'm using XP)

Under Win7 it's called "Devices and Printers", so it may be the same in Vista

I am really grateful to you both but nothing seems to work. I thought I had restored but no joy. I did not get a calendar, though, merely a box to put in what I wanted re dates. maybe I did not do it right. I feel a bit stupid and despondent, so will turn off and maybe have a go at Rojash's suggestion tomorrow, when feeling brighter. I am a great optimist at the start of a new day!Thanks again . Flic
