Quilts for babies.

I am a patchworker/quilter and have made loads of quilts over the years. My daughter in law has asked me to make one for her first baby due at christmas, but a neighbour informed me yesterday that young babies shouldn,t have quilts. I'm mystified. They are made from 100 % cotton including the wadding ------ no polyester in sight! I have also made lots of 'Linus' quilts which are perfectly acceptable for premature babies. Can anyone explain the mystery please?

The only thng I can think is that she's got mixed up with quilted cot 'bumpers'.

that is what they say now, they say to have a couple of layers of blankets on instead. my friend had a patch work quilt made out of all the babies old clothes when she turned one, it was gorg and a real keepsake and alot better than throwing all the old clothes out

It's to do with overheating and cot death if I remember rightly. Layering with sheets and blankets is considered safer than a quilt where thry can easily get caught underneath as it's very light. That being said my info is about 10 years old and they are constantly moving the goalposts where babies are concerned.

I understand that with a duvet, babies can get overheated very quickly, but a lightweight cotton quilt shouldn't present any problems.

perhaps they have confused quilts with duvets. Many cot bed sets have little quilted blankets. It does need to be thin and light though so that layers can be removed from bedding if baby is too warm.

Quilts are fine for babies as far as I know- all of ours had one- and my ex's new babies have had them very recently- as red says I think she's getting confused with duvets ( since we all seem to swap and share the terms quilt/ duvet).
I'm sureit's fine and it'll be lovely:)

health advisors are watchful that babies shouldn't get too hot when they are sleeping, and advise cellular/crocheted blankets and light layers!

but a pretty quilt as a warmer for a car seat, carrycot, for discrete breast feeding or to have' tummy time' (also a new thing on me) on the floor sounds fab to me!

Many thanks everyone! As some of you say I expect 'quilts' and 'duvets' get mixed up! But i agree that a quilt made form cotton with a thin cotton wadding should be fine. Yipee! another quilt to make!!

should be fine, as long as its light an can be layered in and washed easily,we have one on my toddlers bed and she LOVES it xx

All of my children had light quilts (and they were particularly partial to adult feather pillows too - when they actually managed to stay in their own beds).

It could be used for so many things though, underneath on the cot and as said above, floor mat etc... I think they are lovely things to have (I have one on my bed) and it being handmade makes it so much more special.
