I've put one up (like you, with great difficulty..) and it seems that you need to get the rail set up so that it is about an inch longer than the gap you're trying to fit it into. You place the static end where you want it then push in the spring loaded end into place, it should then hold firmly. I then cheated (having had problems before with the damn thing ending up on the floor, along with the shower curtain) and ran a bead of 'no more nails' round the ends of the rail where it touches the walls. So far, one year later, I've had no problems. Good luck!
