Black registration plate on BMW

Yesterday while driving we noticed the the BMW in front had an all black acrylic registration plate on the rear, I think the reg was "2001" I didnt think that was legal or was it a "special" plate?

What colour were the numbers?

Im fairly sure this was a new car, certainly not pre 1973 I think the number were white, but no letters.

Sounds like a vanity plate which are illegal in the UK.

Or a foreign vehicle.

It was a right hand drive car and had no other reg plate on the back, a mystery!

may have been a new car on trade plates they have a habit of putting them on the dashboard and rear parcel shelf to stop folks nicking them if they park up

seen a few about, totaly illegal but only a £60 fine and no points, so assuming you dont draw attention to yourself you could be driving around with it for ages before you get caught.Then pay the £60 and carry on until the next time...(only so many times though before plod get really hacked off)

Phil, trade plates are white and red.

I believe military plates are still (or can be) white/silver on black.
