On my way to work this morning I drove past a guy trying to hitch a lift. I decided that as I was a lone female and it's halloween, the odds were not in my favour so drove on by. ;)

I did notice the guy behind me stop for him though.

Do you pick them up? I know it used to be common practice but would you be put off doing it now where you might have done a few years back?

If I was on my own....never. When I go back to Ireland I'll pick them up though.
When I first joined the Royal Navy , in 1954, it was the only way that many of us could afford to get home for a weekend, an I was always very grateful , to be given a lift on the way, but sadly times have changed, drastically , and now I am afraid that I would not consider a male hitch-hiker, much less a female, or possibly worse two. Pity, but sadly that is the way England has gone.

How come you would in Ireland?
I used to pick them up but to be honest, apart from the week before Pilton, I hardly ever see them these days.
Thinking about it I don't see them before Pilton either really any more.
ive only ever picked up hitchhikers twice (and i wasnt alone in car). First ones i did know, they were horrible girls who had bullied me and my friend for years. second ones ran off terrified 5 miles further on lol
Because it's so rural and the bus services are not great.

Ran of terrified!! What did you do?????

That's the first one I've ever seen in my village but you see them quite a lot where I work because it's not far from the M25 so I guess they get as far as there then need a lift.
i didnt do anything, it was my friend lol. You need to picture her at almost 6ft in her spike healed boots, wearing all black and with crazy black curls. my other half always describes her as dominatrix lol

anyway we were bunking off college on a nice sunny day and driving along coast roaad when we saw 3 rather fit looking guys walking the other way trying to thumb a lift. We turned the car around and managed to squeeze them all in back of the metro, rucksacks in boot and they told us they were cheating on their DofE gold.

one of them was gobby and started going on about how we shouldnt pick up strangers as it was dangerous and we didnt know what we were picking up.The other 2 told him to shut up, but he continued waffling on.

anyway after a while he pipes up "anyway girls, you really shouldnt pick up strangers, we may attack you, and im really really into bondage"

my friend, with perfect timing, reached under my seat, pulled out a 6ft leather whip and said "oh goody, boys, cos so are we"

3 big burly blokes started shouting for the car to be stopped, grabbed all their bags and were last seen running up a hill away from the car.

ha ha ha ha ha. Brilliant!
I would not be afraid of hitchhikers. They usually only murder drivers just the once.

Seriously though, most of them are totally harmless. If they are hitching that usually means they need a lift. If they have got portable red and white number plates such as 187 DH then they are Trade Platers and they need a lift for work. I used to be one of these and us guys really do need a lift. We have even been know to say "Thank You" afterwards.
It was just perfect timing, she's nothing like that at all, the whip was still in my car following a fancy dress party and she thought itd be a joke to give the guy a scare.
I don't think I've ever even seen one!
My dad picked one up once who tried to steal his wallet from the little well between the seats, he grabbed his hand in time though, lamped him and threw him out!
I usually have a good look as I slow down, and based on instinct, I will pick up or not, if it's a man.

I always without fail pick up female hitchers because I worry about their safety.
andy-hughes,
Maybe you should give a little thought to your own, some girls have even been known to lie.

I just don't think I could pick one up - even female, or try and hitch a lift (unless I had no ther choice).

I'm not one to be all worried about these sorts of things but it just doesn't seem like a safe thing to do for me.
I stop for them sometimes, especially if it's on a small road.

Getting on to a motorway, I don't want to be stuck with someone for ages, making inane conversation.

Because we don't do inane conversation, do we. Not we AnswerBankers. Nosiree.
Ex husband and I would sometimes pick up folk heading into london from where we lived in Essex... mostly students and the odd tradeplater trying to save a bit of cash
husbands response redcrx-quality!
We once picked up dofe students and took them back to there teachers, who promptly let them off on there own again, by the end of the day having come across the same group three times heading straight for peat bogs we told the teachers get them off the moor they are in danger of there own stupidity-they had the map upside down For Funks Sake!!!!
Apart from that now we are in a city its mostly trade plate carriers needing to get tot eh other side of the city, which is quicker reached by the motorway.x
I was travelling many years back from Norfolk to Northampton, I picked up a woman in M.Harborough she said she wanted to go to N.Ton, on arriving at N.Ton I used to stop at the Mounts there was a police station across the road from where I used to park, this woman demanded money & If I did not give here some she would inform the police, for people that know N.ton outside the Police station there was a Zebra crossing I parked the lorry outside the police station & dragged her in, then she started crying I was only joking, that was the end of me picking up women. Never again.
