Magnolia Tree fruits.
2 Answers
We have just noticed that our magnolia tree is bearing fruit! Never seen this before and we have had magnolia trees for over thirty years- they are really strange. Can anyone tell me if the seeds can be planred to reproduce, or should we just leave them on the tree for the birds, as having looked on the internet one site did say song birds love these seeds.

Since most magnolias here are pollinated by beetles, rather than flying insects, like bees, it's possible that the appropriate beetle species hasn't been present. If the flowers aren't pollinated, the fruit won't form up.
Secondly, while many magnolias are capable of pollinating themselves, some require another tree in the vicinity for the pollinization process. Also, keep in mind that most varieties take nearly 20 years to flower. Perhaps your's is such a tree.
You're probably aware that the magnolia is one of the most ancient of trees in existence. Probably originated some 60 millions of years ago... (It's also the State flower of Mississippi, here in the U.S.)

Thankyou very much. We actually have 4 magnolia trees in the garden, all are of a different variety and colour. All of our trees are different "ages", this particular one is about 8 years old, and has always bore lots of flowers. We have one tree which is 16 years old, never had any fruit. I think we will just leave the fruit on the tree to see what happens. Thanks again.
